America’s First Net Zero School
Climate Reality Project 2015: Regional Video #3 of 21 films. Part of a series of short films exploring solutions to climate change developed and co-executive produced by Micah Fink.
The Richardsville Elementary School in Kentucky is the first net zero energy school in the United States. How does a school in the heart of coal country become a carbon neutral pioneer? First, by reducing energy demand as low as possible and second, by generating their own energy with solar panels and other green solutions. Today, Richardsville Elementary creates more power than it needs, selling the excess to their local utility. This provides more money for teachers and offers a green energy model for the country.
